Title:
USGS High Resolution Orthoimage for the Boise, ID (Ada County) Urban Area.
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: remote sensing image
Description:
Abstract:
This data set consists of 0.3-meter pixel resolution (approximately 1-foot), natural color orthoimages covering the Boise, ID urban area footprint. This area includes most of northern Ada County with small portions of Boise County and Canyon County. An orthoimage is remotely sensed image data in which displacement of features in the image caused by terrain relief and sensor orientation have been mathematically removed. Orthoimagery combines the image characteristics of a photograph with the geometric qualities of a map. The design accuracy is estimated not to exceed 3-meter diagonal RMSE (2.12m RMSE in X or Y).
Purpose:
This data depicts geographic features on the surface of the earth. It was created primarily as a visual aid for urban and county planning. It also provides easily accessible geospatial data which is readily available to enhance the capability of Federal, State, and local emergency responders, as well as plan for homeland security efforts.

Native_Data_Set_Environment:
Digital images rectified on Windows based computers using Socet Set 4.4.1 software. Images cleaned in Corel Photopaint 8; color balanced in Adobe Photoshop 7. Images translated from Ada County coordinate system to UTM using Blue Marble Geographic Transformer 5.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Original orthophotos were designed to meet standards for 0.5' pixel images. Conversion of images to 0.3m pixel resulted in no noticeable loss of accuracy when images were checked against vector data. No accuracy testing was performed.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Aerial photography from which digital imagery was derived was obtained on 2 different days. Otherwise all imagery was processed using the same equipment and methodology. All GeoTIFF tagged data and image file sizes are validated using commercial GIS software to ensure proper loading before being archived. This validation procedure ensures correct physical format and field values for tagged elements.
Completeness_Report:
Digital imagery covers two separate areas: the main area around Boise and environs; and a smaller area covering 9 sections south of Boise. The original orthophoto tiles were designed to approximate the PLSS layout of Ada County. For this data set the imagery was re-tiled to fit the National Grid System. Tiles around the exterior of the project were incomplete since there was no imagery to cover them, nor vector data for rectification. The images are cloud free.

Vector data used for rectification of orthophotos. Vector data and controlled photography used to geo-referenceimagery.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Rectification and generation of orthophotos. Digitally scanned images were ortho-rectified to the 2000 Ada County vector data using Socet Set v.4.4.1 at a 0.5 'pixel resolution.

QC of imagery. Orthophotos were edge-checked to ensure image alignment across tiles using ArcView 3.3. Orthos were checked for correct image alignment with vector data using VROne 2.0. Unwanted artifacts created during the scanning and rectification processes (such as dust particles, scratches, hair etc.) were removed using Corel Photopaint 8 and 11. Images were color balanced using Adobe PhotoShop 7.

Conversion of orthos to UTM. The cleaned, balanced orthos were mosaiced together in groups of 4 using SocetSet 4.4.1. The mosaiced orthos were transformed from the Ada County coordinate system to UTM using Blue Marble Geographic Transformer 5. The transformed mosaics were then recut to the correct size tiles using Socet Set 4.4.1. QC was then performed on each new tile.

Compression of images. The final UTM orthophoto tiles were compressed at a 20:1 ratio using MrSIDWorkstation 1.4.

Original data set provided to COMPASS (CommunityPlanning Association) in the Ada Countycoordinate system.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
Natural color orthoimagery is organized in three color bands or channels which represent the red, green, and blue (RGB) portions of the spectrum. Each image pixel is assigned a triplet of numeric values, one for each color band. Numeric values range from 0 to 255. Areas where data is incomplete due to lack of full image coverage are represented with the numeric value of 0.
